Words From An AVVA Chapter Representative

Chapter Liaison for Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America (AWA).

Currently, I serve on the Board of Directors as a non-voting member for Chapter #20, Vietnam Veterans of America (WA) in Rochester, New York. Our membership consists of spouses, children, grandchildren, concerned citizens and Veterans of other eras who do not qualify for WA membership. WA members are also able to join.

In January of 1999, the IRS made a decision that Associate membership of Vietnam Veterans of America could not be members of WA because we had over exceeded the limit on membership In a veterans organization. Thus our new organization was formed as a 501 (c) 4 and all of the associates were transferred to AWA. The founding National President was Nancy S. Switzer, who is affiliated with Chapter 20. I have been involved with Chapter 20 since 1982.

Over the years, Associates have been very involved at the chapter level- We are members of Chapter 20's committees as Special Advisors. We have worked on community service programs such as:

  • Adopt a Highway
  • Voter Registration
  • Veterans Outreach Flag Day sales and Golf Tournament
  • Raising awareness on veteran's issues
  • Clothing give a ways to the homeless and needy
  • Hepatitis C clinic
  • Agent Orange Sign Up Program
  • Veterans Stand Down in Rochester, New York
  • We also love to prepare dinners, assist in fundraisers, have Chili contests and love to give big hugs to our veterans.

We are a strong group of individuals and are currently working on the following projects:

  • Clothing drives for the homeless and needy
  • Visiting the Canandaigua VA Hospital for their annual Christmas Paryt
  • Volunteering for the Veteran's Outreach Centers Flag Day sales and annual Golf Tournament
  • Volunteering for Special Olympic events
  • Working at the VA Hospital as a volunteer
  • Welcoming Home Committee for the troops from the Mid East and Afghanistan

We would love for you to join the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America. If you should have any questions or concerns, or would like to volunteer for any of our activities, please contact me at mdavias@rochester.rr.com I look forward to hearing from you.
